Rules and Amateur Status
As golf’s governing body, The R&A is responsible for writing both the Rules of Golf, including the Equipment Rules, and the Rules of Amateur Status.
The R&A has a formal three-tier Rules educational programme with the aim of graduating delegates through the stages to develop their Rules knowledge. The Schools are tailored to provide basic instruction for those newer to the game, as well as meeting the demands of more experienced officials looking for tournament specific guidance.
Many former attendees at R&A Schools have gone on to referee at the highest level, including The Open Championship.
By providing limits on prizes and other benefits, the Rules of Amateur Status ensure that the focus for amateurs is on the challenge of the sport, rather than any financial gain.
